What is an ostomy?
An ostomy is the result of surgery to remove disease and relieve symptoms. It is an artificial opening that allows feces or urine to pass out of the bowel or urethra. The stoma is opened at the end of the bowel tube and the bowel is pulled out of the ventral surface to form the stoma.
Type of stoma:
closed pocket
The advantages of closed pockets are one-time emptying, convenience, and no cleaning. It is suitable for patients whose stool is formed and changed 1 to 2 times a day.
open pocket
The advantage of opening the pocket is that it is easy to empty, the number of replacements is relatively reduced, and it can be washed.
How to put on an ostomy bag
1. Wash the stoma and surrounding skin with warm water and dry it to keep the skin clean. Note: Do not use irritating liquids such as alcohol or iodine 2. Measure the size of the stoma with a stoma ruler. Note: The size of the stoma changes and should be observed regularly.
3. According to the size of the stoma measured, cut a suitable size opening in the stoma membrane. The diameter of the opening is generally 1-2 mm larger than the diameter of the stoma.
4. Spray a little skin care powder around the stoma and spread it evenly for a few minutes to remove excess powder. Precautions: Skin care powder can avoid skin problems caused by foreign body impregnation.
5. Apply the lotion evenly on the skin, and a colorless and transparent protective film will be formed after a few minutes. Note: The smearing area of the protective film should be slightly larger than the area of the chassis glue.
6. Apply the leak-proof cream around the stoma and smooth it with a wet cotton swab, so that the skin and the leak-proof cream form a flat surface.
7. Remove the protective paper.
8. Seal the end of the bag first, and blow a small amount of air into the bag to prevent the bag wall from sticking.
9. Align the cut hole with the stoma and press from the bottom up to fit the skin completely. Gently rest your palm on the pouch for a while to transfer heat to the chassis, making it a safer fit.
10. It is recommended to wear an ostomy tape to enhance adhesion and sense of security. When necessary, a stoma belt can be worn to prevent stoma hernia.
